The Daily Workshop Report
by Robert Sheard (TMF Sheard)

LEXINGTON, KY. (June 19, 1998) -- Through June 17, the 1998 Keystone 10-stock model has picked up some more ground on the Workshop aggressive growth models and now sits in second place, sporting a 28.4% return compared to the 14.4% return for the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index.

I thought I'd take today's column and display the entire field of thirty Keystone stocks from January 1 to demonstrate the consistency of the whole group. There's one major loser in the group of thirty this year, Cendant Corp. <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: CD)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: CD)") end if %>. But, despite a 46% debacle in Cendant, the group of stocks is still considerably ahead of the S&P 500.

Cendant was #11 on the January 1 list, so it isn't affecting the top ten returns, but the 46% loss is included in the groups with 15, 20, 25, and 30 stocks. And all four of those groups have returns in excess of 22%, more than 50% better than the S&P 500.

It's a situation such as the one with Cendant this year that causes me to recommend a total portfolio composition of twenty stocks. With that kind of diversity, a meltdown of significant proportions in one stock doesn't kill your chances of a good year, and it eliminates the need to make your strategy more complicated with questionable sell-stop systems.

Here are the year-to-date returns for all thirty stocks from the January 1 rankings:
