A BSP Resource Guide

Baltimore, MD (March 3, 1999) -- I regularly get requests asking where readers can go for more information about Beating the S&P (BSP) investing strategies. Here's an annotated guide to the key BSP resources that can be found online, all at the click of that tiny little mouse.

For historians, here's the Fribble that started it all, back in March 1996, when I proposed a general BSP strategy.

The Beating the S&P Home Page is a good place to start for most of the basic information. It gives the background of the strategy, the ground rules for choosing the stocks, year-by-year results, and the current year's BSP 30 stocks. It's currently in a renovation phase, so pardon our construction. On some web browsers, there are gaps in the text, so you'll have to scroll down a bit.

Yotommy's BSP Calculator is a great site to find the most current BSP stocks. It lists the current stocks by dividend yield/price and also by RP ratio. Don't forget to drop the lowest-priced of the high yielding stocks to get the traditional BSP Portfolio stocks. The site will also calculate the current Dow Dividend stocks.

For more information about the current BSP 30 stocks (which change annually, around the end of March) check out this site. Here, you'll find dividend information, stock prices, charts, and just about anything else you'll need to know about these leading American companies. You'll notice there's less than 30 stocks included currently, since some have been eaten up by mergers. We'll have our full complement back in a few weeks, when the new BSP 30 stocks arrive.

I write weekly updates discussing the BSP Portfolio returns for the week and year, the current stocks, and other things BSP-ish. They're posted, usually on weekends, in the Workshop and Dow Dividend message boards (both on the AOL and the web). If you search through the messages by date, you can get a lot of nifty information, including the current stocks as of a certain date.

Check out Business Week's annual list of The Top Companies of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. This is the same list we use to choose the annual BSP 30 stocks. Again, the list should change in a few weeks.
