The Daily Workshop Report
by Robert Sheard (TMF Sheard)

LEXINGTON, KY. (June 18, 1998) -- So far in 1998, the original monthly version of Unemotional Growth has escaped without a down month, but June is pushing it to a test. Our May lineup pulled out a victory in the last day and a half of the period after being in the red most of the month. Perhaps that's in store over the last two weeks of June as well. We'll see.

Three of the five stocks are losing ground in our June period. Anchor Gaming <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: SLOT)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: SLOT)") end if %> is down 4.15% after gaining 4.64% last month. PeopleSoft <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PSFT)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PSFT)") end if %> has slipped 8.16% this month, along with a lot of technology stocks. Parametric Technology <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PMTC)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PMTC)") end if %> joins the laggards with a 6.41% loss.

Dell Computer <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: DELL)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: DELL)") end if %> is holding its own with a gain of 0.22% in our June period. The bright spot of the group has been HBO & Co. <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: HBOC)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: HBOC)") end if %>. After splitting 2-for-1, the medical information systems company has gained 17.09% since June 5.

Altogether, the UG5 is down 0.28% since June versus a loss of 0.64% for the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. For the year, however, the Unemotional Growth 5 is still putting on a good show. Here are the individual monthly returns for 1998:

 January 4.83%
 February 12.14%
 March 9.46%
 April 2.02%
 May 1.57%
 June -0.28%

The compound year-to-date return is 33.0% versus 14.2% for the benchmark S&P 500.
