The Daily Workshop Report
by Robert Sheard (TMF Sheard)
LEXINGTON, KY. (March 6, 1998) -- A slew of new numbers and rankings to check out today in the Workshop, Fools. Let's get started. (Do I sound like a basketball coach? Is it obvious that March Madness is here? But I digress.)
Please check out the updated Workshop Rankings, Workshop Database, and Year-to-Date Returns for our eight models. (Just as a reminder, the holding period for these eight screens in our Workshop is one year, so you won't see any changes to the stocks in the portfolios throughout 1998.)
Of the eight screens, seven are still faring better than the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, which is itself on a torrid pace so far in 1998. And two of the forty-nine Workshop stocks continue to lap the field: Best Buy <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: BBY)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: BBY)") end if %>, up 82% already, and Dell Computer <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: DELL)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: DELL)") end if %>, up 65% (that's through Wednesday, however).
Today is also the day we close out the second period for the monthly version of Unemotional Growth. I'll have final numbers for the holdings this weekend, but the five-stock version looks to have finished the month with a double-digit gain. Dell was up 24% for the month. HBO & Co. <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: HBOC)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: HBOC)") end if %> added 6%. Peoplesoft <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PSFT)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PSFT)") end if %> advanced 17%. AirTouch Communication <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: ATI)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: ATI)") end if %> dropped 2%. And Anchor Gaming gained 9%. Compounded on January's gain of nearly 5%, the UG model is up a little more than 16% so far in 1998. None of the five holdings turns over as we head into the next monthly period. We'll hang on to them another month.
Have a Foolish weekend!
