Callaway in the Rough
Callaway Golf price (6/8/99): $15 3/8
Am I the only one who has ever wanted to brandish a Callaway Golf <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: ELY)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: ELY)") end if %> Big Bertha club as I approach the tricky spinning windmill at Hole 18 of the local putt-putt course?
Ely Callaway has built himself quite the company -- and he has the ticker symbol to prove it. He revolutionized the golf circuit with the oversized golf club and is now back to try to steer Callaway away from the hazard. But is this an investment that is up to par? This week Warren Gump (TMF Gump) and Paul Larson (TMF Parlay) are Dueling Fools.
They will square off and, guess what, you get to keep the scorecard. Is this a field of greens or a sand trap? It's a tee party and you're invited. And, when you're done, don't miss this week's Duel Flashback, where we take a look back at our hog-wild Harley Davidson <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: HDI)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: HDI)") end if %> Duel.
You Get to Vote!
Once you've read the arguments and the rebuttals, it's your time to cast your vote. We'll tabulate results each week and revisit them from time to time to see whether you were right! As always, we invite you to join us in the Dueling Fools Message board to continue the duel.

The Bull... Despite hitting the rough for the past two years as sales of golf equipment tightened, Callaway Golf is still the preeminent player in the industry with its Big Bertha products. Continue... |
The Bear... Recently I heard an interesting phrase that I think applies to Callaway Golf in 1999. The phrase goes something like, "Once the bloom is off the rose, all you're left with is a thorny bush." Continue... |
