Duel Flashback:
Yahoo!
Six months ago we reintroduced Dueling Fools. We aspired to wage balanced debate over popular stocks and controversial issues. By kicking things off with Yahoo! <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: YHOO)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: YHOO)") end if %>, we knew we were succeeding on both fronts.
Back on January 28, 1998, with the stock having closed at $60 1/16 the day before, Jim Surowiecki (TMF Cinder) and Paul Larson (TMF Parlay) analyzed the company. Jim argued potential. Paul argued valuation. Our voting Fools sided with Paul, and that was not much of a surprise since the stock has been, and continues to be, one of the most popular shorted equities.
Yet when Wall Street jumped back on Internet stocks earlier this year, it happened in a huge way and Jim laughed all the way to victory. Over the next six months, shares of Yahoo! soared an amazing 215% to $189 3/16, a three-bagger in just half a year.
Victory? Jim Surowiecki!
