3Dfx: To 3D or Not to 3D

The market for 3D accelerator cards, which work with your existing video card to enhance graphic quality, is booming. Just last year you couldn't buy a 3D-enhanced game, today there are more than 400 available or in development.
Round and round the spinning 3Dfx logo goes -- where the market leader stops nobody knows. So, blasting the baddies this week we have Louis Corrigan (TMF Seymor) and Jeff Fischer (TMF Jeff) on opposite sides. After a sizzling 1997, Louis sees continued upside while Jeff is cautious.

Bull... Since my foe Jeff Fischer helped write the persuasive 3Dfx Fool Portfolio buy report, I feel like a bull in a china shop: a bit clumsy by comparison but happy to crash the party! The bull case comes down to three points. First, 3Dfx has got the best technology in one of the only areas of PC-related hardware where this really matters. Second, 3Dfx has used its technology edge to cultivate the top brand in the 3D graphics chip market. Finally, the combination of great technology and a hot brand have positioned it to become a serious contender in the mainstream 3D market, which is exploding. The growth ahead should be breathtaking. Bear... When it comes to discussing the strengths of a particular equity, invested parties are always willing to wax poetic about how "their" company is going to revolutionize its industry. Though Fools aspire to be optimistic, having too much optimism that isn't grounded by a healthy and researched skepticism is not Foolish.
