A Foolish Four Scavenger Hunt

Summary: It might be a little overwhelming to take on the wealth of information across the whole Internet. But if you start right here on this Fool Four page you might be amazed at how much manageable information is at your fingertips. The scavenger hunt below will lead you into a world of Fool Four information and then some, all just a click away.

One of the wonderful things about the Internet is the wealth of information at your fingertips. One of the worst things about the Internet is finding the information you actually need in all that wealth.

I can't take on the whole Internet. If I could, I would be a billionaire soon. But I thought that since this is usually a slow week for news, it might be a good time to check our Foolish Four navigation skills. Ethan Haskel, who normally writes today's column, is on vacation this week. He ran the first Foolish Four Scavenger Hunt last year, and the feedback from it was terrific.

Here's how it works: There are 10 questions below. The answers and a click stream to where the answers can be found will appear in tomorrow's column. But if you want to become a Foolish Four Tour Guide, try tracking them down yourself today. I guarantee you will find something in this area you either never knew about or had forgotten. (I did when making up the questions!)

Note that all of the answers can be found within the Foolish Four area, although some may also be found be in other areas of our site. Today's challenge is to figure out where they are HERE, either on this page or behind one of this page's permanent links. Hint: Start every search with the right nav. (The right nav is short for "right navigation column" which is (surprise!) all that stuff listed on the right side of this page starting with the Top Dow Stocks and heading south.)

The right answer for each question below can be in the form of the information requested or the URL of the page on which the information can be found. There may be more than one correct answer.

Here's your list of things to find. Good luck.

  1. What is the dividend yield for Merck <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: MRK)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: MRK)") end if %>?

Hint: Yield is one of the things we use to determine which stocks are chosen for the Foolish Four list.

  2. Which Dow stock has the highest RP Ratio?

Hint: RP ratio is what determines today's stock list.

  3. Where would you find a Foolish Four article titled "Information Ghoulore"? (And who came up with that horrible headline?)

Hint: The hint is in the pun.

  4. Which stocks were in the original "Real Money" Foolish Four portfolio?

Hint: See the note way down at the bottom of this page.

  5. Which stocks are in the current Foolish Four portfolio?

Hint: It's not the four with asterisks on the Top Dow Stocks lists.

  6. If you were starting a Foolish Four Portfolio today, which stocks would you buy?

Hint: Not the current portfolio stocks.

  7. Which stocks would the Foolish Four strategy have selected in 1968?

Hint: Which link on the right navigation column reminds you of a college class you hated?

  8. Is today's Foolish Four the same as the strategy that was discussed in Tom and David Gardner's first book, The Motley Fool Investment Guide?

Hint: Remember, you don't have to leave this area!

  9. What was the annual return for the S&P 500 in 1974?

Hint: You can find this on three different pages and they are all listed one click away.

  10. How do you calculate the RP?

Hint: Don't buy Foolish Four stocks without understanding this!

Tune in tomorrow and Friday for answers from the back of the book.

Fool on and prosper!
