FOOL GLOBAL WIRE LEXINGTON, KY. (January 21) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan was the focus for the stock market today. Not too long ago, in an after-dinner speech he roiled the markets with speculation about "irrational exuberance." So all ears were intently trained on his address this morning to the Senate Budget Committee. Fortunately for the Bulls, Greenspan suggested that he didn't see "inflationary tensions" in the market now, but that he's watching wage numbers in the employment reports. That elicited a huge sigh of relief in the bond market, since the implication is that the Fed doesn't appear to be planning to raise short-term interest rates. After slipping some 40 points at the open, Blue Chip stocks followed the bond market's recovery and set yet another record high for the Dow. For the 1997 Foolish Four, which hasn't exactly been on a torrid pace to begin the year, it was a nice day. Laggard AT&T <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: T)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: T)") end if %> jumped almost 3% on the day, and General Motors <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") end if %> tacked on nearly 2%, riding the coattails of a strong earnings report today from Chrysler <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: C)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: C)") end if %>. Our two carry-over stocks from last year's portfolio, Chevron <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: CHV)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: CHV)") end if %> and 3M <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: MMM)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: MMM)") end if %>, were up slightly on the day. The real question is which stock will enter the top ten group today, tomorrow or the next day. Almost daily the rankings have been changing because so many stocks are in a virtual dead heat for the tenth and final high-yield spot. With today's action, Caterpillar <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: CAT)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: CAT)") end if %> climbs into the rankings and knocks out DuPont <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: DD)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: DD)") end if %>. Be sure to verify any of the rankings you find here or anywhere else before you invest. The numbers are changing frequently enough that it pays to check the most current information if you're about to update or start a Dow portfolio. |
