FOOL GLOBAL WIRE LEXINGTON, Kentucky (January 9) -- Stocks were in the fast lane again today, with shattered records littering the trading floor like confetti after a World Series parade. (Ah, you gotta throw a bone to Yankee fans once in a while.) The reason for the spurt? The Labor Department released the December Producer Price Index today, a measure of inflation at the wholesale level, and the core rate (which ignores energy and food, which can be very volatile) was only up 0.1%. The benign inflation indicator cheered bond traders and set up a buying spree for blue chips stocks today. Unfortunately, of the current Foolish Four holdings in our model, only Chevron <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: CHV)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: CHV)") end if %> took part in the big rise. AT&T <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: T)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: T)") end if %>, 3M <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: MMM)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: MMM)") end if %>, and General Motors <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") end if %> were all dead weight for the portfolio today. For those of you who purchased International Paper <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: IP)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: IP)") end if %> instead of AT&T amid the rankings switches prevalent last week, you didn't catch a break there either. It's always fun to have a party, but no one likes to be closed out. You could chalk it up to one of those days and don't let it get to you. After all, it's just one day out of approximately 250 trading days for the year when we lagged the Dow. Looking at it that way, it's pretty easy to shake it off and go about your business, eh? Shake it off? Moaning about a gain of 0.8%, you cry? Let's see. A daily gain of 0.8%, compounded for 250 days. That's an annualized return of 633%. Not such a bad day, after all, was it? I'd "settle" for it on a regular basis quite happily, wouldn't you? Announcement: Tomorrow's report may either be early, with incomplete stock prices, or very late. I'm flying out of town tomorrow evening and hope to finish the reports before I leave for the airport, but it'll be close. Bear with me either way. |
