FOOL GLOBAL WIRE LEXINGTON, KY. (December 30) -- Yes, tomorrow is December 31, but in our own perverse way here in the Investing for Growth section, our year actually continues through Friday's close. (I use the first Friday of every period as the starting/closing date for my screens.) So, I'll save my end-of-the-year hoopla for IFG until the end of the week.
Some of you reacted with concern (to put it mildly in a few cases) about my pronouncement Friday that I'm only going to be tracking five-stock portfolios in the Foolish Workshop for 1997. But being the generous soul that I am (especially when it's no trouble at all), I see an easy compromise.
I'll track the five-stock portfolios like I intended, but I'll also list the top ten or fifteen stocks for each screen when I update the database monthly. That way, if you're using more than five stocks in your variation, you're not left out in the cold. Fair enough? Ah, good. Thought you would.
I do want to make an unpaid political announcement, though. I just got a note from Jim O'Shaughnessy letting me know he's going to be on CNBC's Wall Street 101 segment on New Year's Day between noon and 2:00 (eastern). So if you're getting addled with the football overdose or care to set your VCR, you can catch Jim discussing unemotional approaches to investing and the like Wednesday afternoon.
Also, all you screeners out there, don't forget to sign up for the Thoroughbred Stock Challenge. Entries are due by the opening bell Thursday. Hey, it's free; what do you have to lose? Sign up! I'll leave you this evening with an aphorism from The Foolish Dictionary, compiled by Gideon Wurdz: A word to the Wise is useless! Fool on! |
