FOOL GLOBAL WIRE LEXINGTON, Kentucky (December 18) -- What a sweet day for technology stocks! It just about makes up for the last week or two of nervous stomachs and ledge-crawling for some investors. The Nasdaq Composite was up roughly one and a half percent today, not quite back to the 1300 level it enjoyed recently, but within hailing distance nevertheless.
Where do we go from here? The Amazing Wherewillwe says ... Up ... or Down ... err ... Sideways? Up then down, then back up? Over the hill and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go?
Enough of this silliness. No one knows and anyone who says he does know is either deluded or trying to get your business. (Sometimes it's the same guy). So do what you can, pick good stocks based on sound reasoning and play the long-term odds that the market goes up about 11% a year. And with the Dow Approach variations averaging about twice that each year, your job with growth stocks is to Beat Beating the Dow. If you find you're not beating that benchmark consistently, concede the point that maybe growth stocks aren't your forte and join the Dow Approach devotees. For thirty minutes a year, it's kind of fun to put the Wall Street pros to shame, isn't it?
If you do beat Beating the Dow consistently, then you're doing something right, Fool. Keep it up and you'll retire a happy investor some day. Either way, it's nice to know that plan B still pummels the plan most investors use -- mutual funds.
If you made it to the Thoroughbred Stock Challenge web-site last night, thanks for stopping by. Some of you, however, entered your stock choices with no names or e-mail addresses. Unfortunately, I had to delete those. I've since rewritten the code where you have to fill in those blanks before it will accept your entry. I've also rewritten one section (don't worry, you won't even notice it), to include the date and time of your entry. Some people are entering more than once. Now I can tell which entry comes first and I'll include only your last entry if you submit more than one.
The response last night was nice, but I want to increase it five-fold to really give the system a workout over the next month or two. So, beat the bushes and get your friends to enter. Doesn't cost anything and maybe down the road I'll come up with some cool prizes for the monthly and quarterly winners.
In the meantime, stay Foolish and do your homework! Enjoy.
