FOOL GLOBAL WIRE LEXINGTON, KY. (December 2) -- So is it the January effect starting in December or what? Smaller stocks blew past the Dow heavyweights today in the first such session in some time. Many of the technology stocks were on fire and IFG newcomer (and Fool Portfolio stable pony) 3Com was no exception. The networking company shot up more than 4% today, helping boost IFG to some much-needed holiday cheer.
The only news today (although the press release reads more like a commercial than a news release) is 3Com's announcement of a new Port Switch Hub product, the SuperStack II Port Switch Hub 10. The new product sets a standard in price and performance for managed stackable hubs. The new product comes in under $55, which is below the cost of many unmanaged stackable solutions. Here's the company's tag-line: "The SuperStack II Port Switch Hub 10 can be upgraded to 3Com's Power Grouping technology to scale management, boost bandwidth and build a cost-effective migration path towards switched networks from just $60 per port." Yeah, but can print that on the sales rep's business card?
The other huge winner today is Claire's Stores, which has bounced back with a vengeance. At one point last week, Claire's hit a low of $13 7/8. Three sessions later, Claire's has picked up more than 24%, closing today above $17 again. All through this recent slide, the company has insisted that its numbers and growth rates are strong, and to their credit, the numbers have been consistent with their projections. The EPS ranking is still in the high 90s and the Relative Strength ranking has scratched back into the 70s. Looks like some believers have climbed aboard in the last three sessions.
And last today, Green Tree announced that it has completed its acquisition of FINOVA Group's Manufacturer and Dealer Services division. The division will now be known as Green Tree Vendor Services Corporation, and will focus on vendor-oriented sales finance programs involving leasing and financing products for small business equipment purchasers.
For those of you confused by my "monthly" schedules, keep in mind that my months extend from first Friday to first Friday. November, on my calendar at least, doesn't end until this Friday (December 6). So, look for the monthly models to be updated next weekend. And the monks thought they had it bad when Gregory XIII started revising the Julian calendar!
