(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE) LEXINGTON, KY. (October 11): The new classic Investing For Growth rankings are posted and nothing changed dramatically from last week's list. The same ten stocks remain in the top group, although the order differs slightly because of changes in Value Line's Industry rankings. I'll post the weekly updates for the Relative Strength variation and the new Unemotional Growth model Saturday afternoon or evening (after Monday's IBD comes out). Look for these files in the IFG Statistics Center.
There wasn't any news concerning our IFG holdings today, but that didn't stop several of them from making big moves (unfortunately, not all in the right direction). On the down side MIRAGE RESORTS <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:MIR)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:MIR)") end if %> and GREEN TREE <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:GNT)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:GNT)") end if %> continue to struggle. MIR slid 1.0%, recovering a bit from its earlier lows for the day and GNT dropped 1.2%. Fortunately, three of our holdings acted as foils for the losers. COCA-COLA <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:KO)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:KO)") end if %> ended its recent weakness today, enjoying a bounce of 1.5% along with the DJIA blue chips. 3COM <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:COMS)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:COMS)") end if %> picked up 1.5%. And TELLABS <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:TLAB)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:TLAB)") end if %>, fresh from an impressive earnings report, tacked on an additional 1.9% to its value today.
In a completely unrelated, but very important story, the FBI and the SEC arrested some 45 people across the country today who are accused of stock manipulation and fraudulent brokerage kickbacks in the over-the-counter penny-stock arena. As depressing as this kind of corruption can be, it's certainly no surprise to anyone who has read the Gardners' book and can recall the penny-stock tales about Joey Roman. If anyone needed a justification for why we so adamantly eschew stocks trading under $5, take a look at today's news story.
Have a Foolish weekend!
