(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Elizabeth Braznell

ST. LOUIS, MO, October 2 -- Yesterday the Dow closed for the first time ever above 5900, and today it continued to set records, closing at 5933.60, up 28.7 points. The firm bond market was credited for much of the rise. The Nasdaq, which missed out on yesterday's Dow climb, rose 14.6 points to 1,236.12. The IFG portfolio walked up the magic steps with the Dow and Nasdaq as seven of the ten stocks rose.

As far as news, well, that's a bust. Leave it to DowMan to appoint me guest IFG commentator when there's nothing to comment on. Hmpf!

Speaking of news, in yesterday's Fool Portfolio write-up, Tom Gardner discusses how "news" is made and what constitutes "news". His example is AOL's drop on news that's a rehash of stuff from a 10-k filed months ago. It's good reading, and while Tom was scratching his head over the business journalisitic community's rush to print old stuff, I'm scratching my own head over stocks that move so greatly without news at all. Go figure.

The best I can do for you is to note that Hewlett-Packard (HWP) is part of the consortium formed with IBM to develop the key recovery system President Clinton requires to allow businesses to export stronger encryption programs. The announcement appeared after the close today, so it will be interesting to see if it helps HWP recover some of the 3.92% drop it experienced today (down $1 7/8). That drop earns HWP today's spot in the IFG doghouse.

Joining HWP in the IFG doghouse is Checkpoint Systems (CKP), which lost yesterday's headway and more, closing down $3/4 (2.79%) on no news. The other loser is SCI Systems, down $1/4 (.44%), also on no news.

Accepting the rose wreath in the winner's circle is 3Com (COMS), up $4 1/8 (6.82%) today on absolutely no news. Running second was Tellabs, Inc. (TLAB), up $3 7/8 (5.63%), again on no news. This is in stark contrast to TLAB's drop yesterday.

Nichols Research (NRES) headed up $1 1/2 (5.08%), but again, on no news. Quick & Reilly (BQR), Paychex (PAYX), Mirage Resorts (MIR) and Rotech (ROTC) all headed up on -- guess what? -- no news.

Pretty good day for the IFG Portfolio. On the whole, no news is good news. Makes for a short write-up, too.
