(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE) LEXINGTON, KY. (September 18): IFG Passes the S&P 500!!!!
I though about using that as today's headline for the IFG write-up, but when you look past the glitz and glamour of hyped headlines, there's usually an uglier side that doesn't show up right away. And such is the case here, too. Such a headline wouldn't point out the fact that the S&P 500 is trailing the other two major indices this year, both of which are still beating the IFG portfolio. Nor does it point out that unless IFG gets moving in a hurry in the 4th quarter, 1996 is going to drag down the model's historical average return a bit.
All that aside, it was still a nice day and over the last two weeks, the IFG model has come to life as if Dr. Frankenstein had just recently galvanized it. Let's hope our creation fares a little better than his!
First the bad performers. Two stocks had disappointing drops today, Nichols Research and Paychex. I'm still trying to locate news on Paychex's earnings release to see if that's responsible for the drop, but I'm having problems getting into AOL's Company News feature, so I'll try to pull that release for tomorrow's report.
Now the stars. 3Com continues to scorch ahead, taking on nearly $2 per share more today. I thought the Fools had blown the timing when they added this one to the Fool Portfolio recently -- perfect evidence as to why I'm no market timer or short-term trader.
Also up strongly today was RoTech Medical, posting an 11% jump following yesterday's positive earnings report. And finally, SCI Systems joined the other successful tech stocks moving the portfolio forward.
I'll do my best to fill in the company news gaps in tomorrow's report, but all in all, another nice day for the model versus the overall market. If you have questions about IFG or my newer model, the Unemotional Growth (UG) approach, please join me in the Novice Investor chat tonight at 9:00 (Eastern). I won't do penny-stocks and options, but I'll be glad to talk about all those basics that we need to remind ourselves about from time to time. See you then.
