(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE) LEXINGTON, KY. (September 12): Wouldn't you know it? The best day the IFG portfolio has had in months, and I virtually missed it. I decided to spend today working at the library on my investment models and left the house a few minutes after the market opened. So, before I left I noticed a small gain, but nothing to suggest the Nasdaq was going to explode to the upside the rest of the day.
And fortunately for IFG investors, when the Nasdaq is strong, so usually is the IFG basket of holdings. Today we were ten-for-ten. That's right, a clean sweep. And I'm not talking sixteenths and eighths; I mean big moves! The funny thing is I can't find any news stories yet to explain the jumps, although some of them are large enough where there's bound to be some news coming.
For example, Checkpoint Systems was up more than 13%. I don't yet know why, though. I asked my secretary to see if she could find out, but then my wife informed me that I don't have a secretary, so I guess I'll have to wait until something shows up on the AOL News service.
Other big movers include SCI Systems (up 4.0%), Nichols Research (up 3.2%), and Tellabs (up 2.7%).
I normally counsel investors not to watch the news day by day if it makes them jumpy. The whole thesis behind the research and modeling I do is that the Unemotional Investor wins the war by ignoring the daily battles. But on days like today, it wouldn't have hurt to break my own rule and watch the ticker tape go by. It's a rare day when the model goes 10-for-10 (in the right direction). And tomorrow it could give it all back. For tonight, though, we're going to celebrate while the celebrating's good. Stay Foolish!
