The Daily IFG Report

(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, KY. (September 4): It was a calm day for most of the IFG stocks today. The three exceptions were Nichols Research, which gave back yesterday's healthy advance on no news, Mirage Resorts, which posted a fine gain, also on no news, and 3Com, which enjoyed a pop on an upgrade from SoundView Financial.

Analyst Michael Karfopoulos raised his short-term rating on 3Com from "hold" to "buy" and kept his long-term rating a "buy." He raised fiscal 1997 earnings estimate a nickel a share to $2.25 and bumped his 1998 estimate from $2.87 to $3.00. Looks like the Fool Portfolio's addition of 3Com was pretty well-timed.

***** A research update *****

I'm continuing to pull together the numbers to test the IFG/Relative Strength approach, and as I expected, the numbers appear to be a bit better than using the original IFG approach. They're not anywhere near as exciting, however, as the numbers generated over the same time period by the new growth model (which we haven't named yet) I unveiled last week. (See the Fribble called "A New Growth Model.") Nevertheless, once I finish pulling the numbers together for IFG/RS, I will post the results online for everyone to browse.

We've had some very good luck finding another archive of old Investor's Business Daily newspapers. I'll be making plans soon to visit a library which is supposed to have an archive dating from mid 1986. If all goes well, that will give us eleven years of data for the model, a period which includes the 1987 crash and the 1990 recession, so we'll get a better sense of how well the approach holds up in weak markets.

It will be several weeks before I can make a trip to the library and get the results collated, so I ask your patience, but as always, as soon as I have complete results, I'll share them with you here online.

Fool on!
