(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, KY. (September 3): I have no doubt some day-traders made money today, probably both going down this morning and coming back this afternoon. But I'm not sure I could have. Today's rapid plunge at the open and then bounce-back later in the day is more compelling evidence why we generally counsel readers against short-term trading.

Only the most nimble, the most fore-sighted, and the most lucky could have predicted both the downward and upward movements in today's session. And for most of us who aren't full-time traders, and by that, I mean almost all of us who have lives apart from a real-time quote machine and our broker programmed into our speed-dial phone bank, any attempt to try to profit from such short-term swings is dangerous at best.

And for those traders who were on the wrong side of the market's decline and rebound? Well, even with their Quotreks and speed-dialing fingers, they still got whacked. I'm not going to say it's impossible to make good money as a day-trader, but I know I couldn't do it, and I suspect 99% of you couldn't either.

Fortunately, there are other ways to grow wealth, ones that those of us with other occupations and interests can take advantage of and keep our lives intact. Stay Foolish and take advantage of them. Your Pepcid bill will probably shrink as well!

Overall, today's IFG model fared well. Nichols Research, SCI Systems, and Tellabs all made strong moves, held back only by the precipitous drop in RoTech Medical. As for company-specific news, the only thing appearing on the wires was a $1,000 price-cut by Hewlett-Packard on its HP DesignJet 755CM large-format color inkjet printer.

The 755CM is used principally by design professionals who require large-scale printouts. According to Bernard Meric, general manager of the DesignJet division, HP is simply passing on the savings its realized because memory costs have declined substantially.

Stay Foolish!
