The Daily IFG Report

(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, KY. (August 28): If we could rest our entire year's laurels on one day, today's IFG performance wouldn't be a bad one to choose. Eight of the ten holdings posted gains, and five of those are what I'd call schweeeet one-day moves. The only loser was SCI Systems, and it dropped only 50 cents a share. (RoTech was unchanged on the day.)

Checkpoint Systems led the pack today with a big jump (after recent weakness) on the news that it's settled its antitrust lawsuit filed against PolyGram records. The dispute was over the use of a specific technology incorporated as a security tag on compact discs.

Under the agreement, PolyGram will suspend its practice of tagging CDs with what is known as single electronic article surveillance technology. Checkpoint disputes the use of electronic article surveillance to the exclusion of other technologies, including its own, which is known as radio frequency source tagging and contends its security tags are less expensive.

It has a pending antitrust lawsuit against the National Association of Recording Merchandisers related to the same technology. That lawsuit is not affected by the settlement with PolyGram, Checkpoint said.

Another solid mover today was Nichols Research. Nichols signed an amended agreement with TXEN Inc. to speed up its option to purchase the remaining shares of TXEN within one year. Nichols purchased a 19.9%interest in TXEN in December 1994, retaining an option to purchase the remaining shares by July 1998.

3Com continued yesterday's advance on the news of a major corporate restructuring. The Fool Portfolio's latest growth stock is off to a fine start. Is 3Com going to replace Iomega in the hearts of Fools everywhere?

RoTech Medical, today's one non-mover, announced the filing of a registration statement with the SEC to cover the resale of $110 million aggregate principal amount of convertible subordinated debentures and the shares of common stock which are initially issuable upon conversion of the debentures. (Yes, this one sent me scrambling to find my undergraduate finance text, too. It didn't help untangle the jargon much, though.)

The debentures are dated June 1, 1996, have a term of seven years, bear interest of 5.25% per year and have a conversion price of $26.25 per share. The debentures were originally issued to qualified institutional buyers and certain non-U.S. persons in reliance upon exemptions from the registration requirements of the U.S. Securities Laws. RoTech will not receive any of the proceeds from any sale of the debentures.

Whew, on to things I understand! Paychex and Tellabs continued their winning ways today. No news on either, just nice gains.

Enjoy the terrific day, Fools. These have been too few in recent months for IFG fans.
