(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
LEXINGTON, KY. (August 19): When I wrote the primer for Investing For Growth, I remember commenting that I'm through forever with back-testing research. Two or three hundred hours putting together the data for Investing For Growth made me think I didn't have it in me to put in that kind of concentrated effort again. "The best laid plans..."
I've found, though, that this kind of research is addictive to someone like me. I grew up playing with baseball cards, not trading them or putting them in the spokes of my bike, but compiling the statistics from the backs of the cards in stacks of notebooks. (Today's cards are crammed full of garbage - all glitter and foil and fluff - give me the meat, the numbers!) Later I'd take the stats and put together my own All-Star teams and have them compete based on the probabilities of success derived from the players' career stats. (Believe it or not, I wasn't quite the nerd this makes me sound; I just loved order and numbers and comparisons.)
Now that I've tested a number of other investment models over the past year, I've found that it's part of me. When I'm in the middle of a test, it's something I can't wait to have done, for sure, but before I've even finished testing one model, I've got another one cooking on the back burner.
Such is the case even now after returning from New York. While I was there, I was gathering the data, not just to back-test the Relative Strength variation of Investing For Growth, but also a new model I've been following quietly until I could get some data for it. I won't reveal the details yet, but I will tease you with the fact that the early results seem to be very exciting. (I feel I can afford to tease a little because you should know full well by now that as soon as I can get all the details together, I'll share them right here.) The one teaser I'll give you, though, is that the latest model is sitting on 50%+ gains so far in 1996 (and previous years fared well, too).
As always, look for details here and in the Investing For Growth folder. I'm doing my best to get the numbers together quickly. Stay Foolish!
