The Daily IFG Report

(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 16): As bad as things have been lately for Hewlett-Packard <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:HWP)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:HWP)") end if %>, today's price quote isn't a sign of the apocalypse. The stock did indeed split 2-for-1 this morning.

The company also announced today that it's in talks with two Taiwanese semiconductor firms over proposals to build a billion-dollar wafer plant there. Given Texas Instruments' <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:TXN)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:TXN)") end if %> earnings warning today, another in a long line of major technology company disappointments which have pulled the Nasdaq down more than 15% from its June high, one has to wonder if HWP really wants to be building another fab plant. But I'm out of my league discussing the intricacies of high tech industries, so I'll leave it to other Fools to make those judgments.

Hewlett-Packard also made two other product announcements today, neither of which are decipherable by the likes of me, so I'll include the first portions verbatim and let those of you who are technically inclined seek out the full reports at Keyword: Company News.

"Hewlett-Packard today at SEMICON West unveils its lowest-cost solutions for testing mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs), the HP 9490XL Models 64 and 128. These systems are targeted at production test and wafer probing of low-cost devices for which cost-of-test is critical. HP 9490XL Model 64 is being showcased through July 18 at Moscone Center Hall 4, Booth 5522."

And,

"Hewlett-Packard today at SEMICON West unveils its lowest-cost solution for wafer-level testing of nonvolatile memory, such as flash memory, and of mixed memory/logic integrated circuits (ICs). The new solution, the HP V1200, is being demonstrated at Moscone Center Hall 4, Booth 5522 through July 18."

There you have it, all the company-specific news for the IFG stocks on this wild day. If the AOL Quotes feature continues to foul up, don't forget that you can get stock quotes at Keyword: TradePlus. Use menu option 113 once you're through E*Trade's gateway to get individual company quotes.
