(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 18): Overall, it wasn't a pretty day as the Nasdaq Composite was hammered for more than a 2% loss. Given that the Nasdaq has outpaced the other indices so far in 1996, this isn't a totally unexpected pull-back. Worries about the impending earnings season have the market players jittery. Ah well, on to real news.

Checkpoint Systems <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CKP)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CKP)") end if %> announced a new product today, the Shoe Label. It's the only RF EAS (radio frequency electronic article surveillance) source tagging label designed to protect footwear from theft. The tags are embedded directly in the shoes during manufacturing so they can't be removed in the store by would-be shoplifters or dishonest employees.

Oracle <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ORCL)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ORCL)") end if %> also announced a number of new items today. First, Oracle announced the immediate availability of PowerBrowser Release 1.5, the first browser on the market to offer support for both Java and Basic scripting. With this release, Oracle PowerBrowser adds support for Java, Sun's cross-platform programming language that is designed for secure two-way, real-time interaction over the Internet. Java "applets" allow standard Web pages to come alive by adding live animation, expert graphics, live information updates and greater user interactivity with networked servers.

Second, Oracle announced that it will integrate font fidelity technology from Bitstream Inc. that will allow Oracle PowerBrowser users to view Web pages as the publisher intended them to be seen. PowerBrowser is Oracle's tool for publishing and viewing data in corporate intranets or on the public Internet, and is the first browser on the market to support both Java and Basic scripting.

And finally, Oracle said it would unveil a new groupware networking product, called Pegasus, at a press conference in San Francisco on Thursday morning. Oracle Vice President for database technologies Jnan Dash, speaking at the seventh annual Bear, Stearns technology conference, gave few details of the product, but said it is part of the company's plan to capitalize on its core server technologies in the near future.

Computer Associates <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") end if %>, IFG's other current software holding, was upgraded today by Dean Witter analyst Peter Rubicam. The stock was moved from Buy to Dean Witter's recommended list.

Computer Associates also announced that it has entered into an alliance with Cheyenne Software <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(AMEX:CYE)") else Response.Write("(AMEX:CYE)") end if %> to provide solutions for management and protection of corporate computer data. According to Charles Wang, Computer Associates' chairman and CEO, the two have "teamed together to provide the first integrated solution to manage storage uniformly across the enterprise."
