by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan) LEXINGTON, Ky. (Apr. 29): On a ho-hum day for Wall Street, the IFG portfolio was no exception. None of the ten holdings made significant moves today. Overall, though, the IFG Model trailed the three major indices for the day.
In partnership news, medical device maker Medtronic <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:MDT)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:MDT)") end if %> announced today that it has acquired, through a cooperative venture with the Universiteit Utrecht, exclusive rights to a new technology designed to stabilize a portion of the heart during minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
The Utrecht Octopus Method involves an instrument placed on the surface of the heart to immobilize a portion of it in order for a surgeon to works on it while the rest of the heart continues beating. This allows surgeons, in some cases, to perform the needed bypass surgery without performing the more invasive median sternotomy ("cracking the chest").
The benefits of the less invasive procedure are obvious: shorter recovery times, less pain and trauma, and also reduced costs as well as better clinical outcomes.
Medtronic said it also signed a license agreement and got the U.S. patent on another new technology for cardiac surgery developed by cardiac surgeon Dr. Roberto Grinfeld of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Grinfeld's "cannula" technology involves a balloon used as an internal aortic clamp.
In other IFG stock news, Oracle announced that Alcoa will use Oracles Applications Release 10SC to standardize the business processes of its 22 separate units. Alcoa selected Oracle's financial and manufacturing applications, including the Oracle/Datalogix GEMMS modules. Alcoa is now working closely with Oracle Services, the company's professional consulting organization, to have modules in production by the end of the year. The company-wide, Oracle-based system will support 60,000 users.
