by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan) LEXINGTON, Ky. (Apr. 26): The IFG Model holdings were mixed today and no news crossed the wire, so this gives me the chance to go over the new rankings that just came out.
As you know from following the IFG Model Portfolio, the list of current stocks changes every week, but once you've purchased your portfolio, you hold them for 13 weeks, regardless of how the rankings shift after you buy them. Otherwise, you'd be trading every week and go broke in commissions. So be sure if you're starting a new IFG portfolio, or updating your current one at the end of your 13-week holding period, that you select your stocks from the Current IFG Stocks list, not the list of holdings for the IFG Model Portfolio.
You'll notice a couple of changes in this week's new list of Current IFG Stocks. The first is that United HealthCare <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:UNH)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:UNH)") end if %> dropped from the #1 slot last week clear off the list. Value Line downgraded the stock for Timeliness, so it no longer qualifies as an IFG stock.
Another change is that Tellabs <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:TLAB)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:TLAB)") end if %>, while still meeting the IFG criteria of high growth and a top Timeliness ranking, has slipped from the list because the Telecom Equipment industry group has fallen in the rankings. Tellabs is now the eleventh-ranked IFG stock, just missing the new list.
Two other stocks joined Tellabs by sliding off the list while still meeting the general IFG criteria; both 3Com <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:COMS)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:COMS)") end if %> and Seagate Technology <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:SEG)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:SEG)") end if %> fell in the rankings, slipping to numbers 12 and 13 respectively.
Joining the top ten list for the first time since we started our online area is Quick & Reilly Group <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:BQR)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:BQR)") end if %>, debuting at #5. And with the Industry Ranking changes, three software stocks that have been in and out of the IFG rankings in recent weeks rejoin the top ten: Oracle <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ORCL)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ORCL)") end if %>, Computer Associates <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") end if %>, and Sterling Software <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:SSW)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:SSW)") end if %>.
We're adding a new feature to the IFG Statistics Center this weekend. I'll be posting two new files, similar to the ones I post in the Dow Area each weekend. One file will list all of the current IFG stocks, with a number of variables needed by the several variations we follow online. This file will also include the new lists for the several variations and a key to understanding their differences. The second new file will be a year-to-date track record on the various approaches' returns.
We decided to post these files in the IFG Statistics Center each weekend so they'd be easy to find and compiled in one location rather than posting several message board entries each weekend. Look for the new files Saturday evening. We hope you enjoy them. My thanks to Mike Buckley and Todd Gunerman for helping me gather the data for these files.
Have a Foolish weekend!
