by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan) LEXINGTON, Ky. (Apr. 12): The first week of the new IFG holding period is over, and despite the market's wicked ways this week, it looks like we managed not to drown. We're not likely to look back on the week as an unqualified success, but hey, we're still fighting the good fight.
The new list of IFG stocks is posted and except for some order changes, the same ten stocks remain on the current list. Look for the new list for the Relative Strength variation later this weekend in the IFG folder.
The new top dawg, United HealthCare <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:UNH)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:UNH)") end if %> announced today the completion of its acquisition of HealthWise of America <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:HOAM)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:HOAM)") end if %>. United HealthCare will be issuing roughly 4.3 million shares of common stock, exchanging 0.6475 shares of UNH for each share of HealthWise. With the deal counted as a pooling-of-interests, United HealthCare sees the acquisition as non-dilutive to earnings and expect s to take a one-time charge in the June quarter to cover the merger costs.
In last night's Boring Portfolio report, Greg Markus discussed the stories surrounding the big bucks paid to Green Tree's Chairman/CEO, Lawrence Coss. Last year Coss received a $65.1 million bonus (mostly in stock) on top of his base salary of $433,608. Green Tree says the bonus is a direct reflection upon the growth in Green Tree earnings over the past five years, from $0.29 a share to $1.18 - a 44% growth rate. I'll bet you didn't know just how lucrative it is financing those mobile homes.
Relative Strength Variation Update: The quarterly version is up 9.17% for the year, versus the S&P 500's gain of 3.24%. The monthly version is up 11.63%. (Both portfolios began on January 5.)
