by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan) LEXINGTON, Ky. (Apr. 9): Today was a bit of a light news day for the Investing For Growth portfolios as earnings season is about to jump into high gear later this week.
Oracle <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ORCL)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ORCL)") end if %>, one of the regular IFG holdings which was held over from last quarter's group was downgraded from Strong Buy to Neutral today by Alex. Brown. No reason was listed in the press release but my suspicion is that its a reaction to some recent earnings warnings by other software companies. Oracle's quarter doesn't end until May, however, so no earnings are due out again until the end of June.
In other Oracle news, the company announced that it has taken a minority interest in Radley Corporation and that the companies have entered into an agreement to deliver integrated application software designed specifically for automotive suppliers and manufacturers. The plan is to combine the Oracle7 relational database, Oracle Applications (a suite of client/server applications), and Radley's CARaS (an automated release accounting system).
In more Oracle news, LEESON Electric Corporation, a leading manufacturer and distributor of industrial-duty electric motors, has adopted the full suite of Oracle Applications for its business.
And finally for Oracle today, the company announced its strategy for delivering local versions of Oracle Payroll to multi-national companies. Payroll is a rules-based client/server application that manages automated payrolls. The application's flexibility allows multi-national companies to implement payroll policy and legislative changes into the plan as they grow and cross international borders.
For those readers following the Relative Strength variation for IFG, Sterling Software <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:SSW)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:SSW)") end if %> announced today that its Data Access Division has reached an agreement with EveryWare Development Co. to bundle Butler SQL (EveryWare's client/server relational database management system) into CLEAR:Access for the Macintosh.
Also for Sterling, its Sterling Commerce subsidiary <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:SE)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:SE)") end if %> announced new support for Microsoft SNA Server in its market-leading CONNECT:Direct for Windows NT. The new release makes it the only product that supports both SNA and TCP/IP for advanced information networking to and from Windows NT and a variety of enterprise platforms, including IBM MVS and VSE, Novell NetWare, UNIX via 13 different vendors, IBM AS/400, DEC, Tandem, Stratus, and Microsoft Windows NT.
