by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Apr. 3): Two of the computer software stocks in the IFG model portfolio were in the news today. Computer Associates <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") end if %> lost a legal battle today when a New York State Supreme Court judge ruled against the company and ordered it to pay $12 million in a royalty dispute growing our of the $100 million acquisition of Online Software International, makers of DataVantage software, in 1991.

The plaintiffs said the New York state arbitration panel found that CA "fraudulently concealed" transactions to avoid paying royalties to the developers. A Computer Associates spokesman said the company planned to appeal the recent decision, which was based on the arbitration award entered last year.

Computer Sciences <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CSC)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CSC)") end if %> announced two steps in preparing for the new millennium. Computer Sciences signed a strategic licensee agreement with Peritus Software Services to provide consulting and technology solutions for companies facing the computer dilemma facing us as we head toward 2000 on the calendar. The second step is the announced release of Computer Sciences' new Catalyst2000 methodology for guiding year 2000 projects. Since most computers will read the year 2000 as 1900 (only having the capability to change the last two digits of the year), Computer Science is working to prevent complete collapses in many systems' time-sensitive applications. Imagine trying to cash your paycheck with the year 1900 on it. It's amazing how these seemingly little details can wipe us out in the "information age."

Computer Sciences also announced another strategic alliance today, teaming up with CheckPoint Software Technologies, the market share leader in network security software. The companies will co-market Computer Sciences' range of systems integration services and CheckPoint's FireWall-1 network security software.

For those of you following the IFG (Relative Strength) variation, that model portfolio gained 0.95% today. Since its inception on February 19, the portfolio is up 6.73% versus a gain of 1.22% for the S&P 500.
