by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan) LEXINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 29): A disappointing first quarter draws to a close today for the IFG portfolio. Trailing all the market indices and struggling to get into positive territory year-to-date, this has not been the most glorious era for the IFG approach.
Nevertheless, take heart. The approach has had rough patches before and will have them again, but long-term investors can take comfort in the fact that over time, the approach has still trounced the market. And with the advent of the new IFG variations we're following in the message board folder, perhaps we'll even be able to avoid some of the rough patches in the future. The research continues.
Many of you have asked about back-testing my Relative Strength approach. Let me say that I've been in contact with Investor's Business Daily, and I'm waiting to hear whether it will be possible/practical/affordable for me to get access to their historical database to pull some numbers and test the variation. I'll keep you posted in the folder as details become clear.
On to the news. . . ADC Telecom <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ADCT)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:ADCT)") end if %> got a boost from SoundView Financial today when analyst Susan Kalla raised her short-term rating to buy from hold. She left the long-term rating as a hold. She also bumped her 1996 earnings estimate from $1.20 a share to $1.30 and raised 97 numbers from $1.51 to $1.68.
Computer Associates <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CA)") end if %> played philanthropist today, announcing a partnership with S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook to bring state-of-the-art software to the classroom. Medtronic, Guidant <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:GDT)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:GDT)") end if %> and Ventritex <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:VNTX)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:VNTX)") end if %> all stand to gain as a result of the study.
