The Daily IFG Report
(FOOL GLOBAL WIRE)
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 20) -- Well, we're finally open. Wouldn't you know it
would happen on a day when technology stocks get pasted? Nevertheless, welcome
to the inaugural report from the Motley Fool's new Investing For Growth (IFG)
area. Each day, I'll be recounting the news and movements of the ten stocks
in the IFG model portfolio. Make it part of your daily routine to check the
area and its companion---the Dow Area.
If you're not familiar with Investing For Growth, please click the top button
on the IFG main screen and read a brief article which outlines the investing
approach. Then browse the area's screens and the historical information posted
for your easy access.
On to the stocks. . .
The big news for technology stocks came with Digital Equipment's <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:DEC)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:DEC)") end if %>
announcement of weaker-than-expected PC sales. The entire sector fell off
the map on Digital's earnings warning, probably more on fears that this may
be the first of many such warnings rather than the actual news itself. The
IFG portfolio doesn't hold DEC, of course, but the market didn't discriminate
today. Computer stocks across the board were pounded.
One of our semiconductor stocks *was* in the news, though, much to our portfolio
balance's chagrin. Merrill Lynch analyst Tom Kurlak got tough on Intel
<% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:INTC)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:INTC)") end if %> today, cutting his FY 1996 earnings estimates from $4.30 a
share down to $3.85. He also initiated FY 1997 estimates in a range from
$4.00 to $4.10. You read that correctly; he's looking for earnings to grow
only 4%-7% year over year. Oof! For more detailed analysis of the Intel story,
take a walk through MF Templar's special research section. He's doing great
(and amazingly timely) things there these days. Ah, but he's young. We'll
wear him out soon enough.
It wasn't all bad news for the IFG portfolio though. Computer Sciences <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:CSC)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:CSC)") end if %>
landed its second major military contract this week. Today the company announced
that it has been awarded a $4.9 million contract over five years to provide
"management, engineering, logistics and financial services" to the Naval
Command, Control and Ocean Surveillance Center in San Diego.
And Tellabs <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:TLAB)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:TLAB)") end if %>, a stock which has been in the red for IFG from
the day it was added some seven months ago, finally broke the surface into
positive territory yesterday after announcing a new equipment contract with
Telmex. Tellabs gave back some of yesterday's gain, but it still held above
water for IFG. We'll take the small victories wherever we can.
Once again, welcome to the Foolish Center for IFG studies. What started as
a simple mechanical model is getting bigger and better as more Fools take
a crack at improving it. Hope you'll come along for the ride.
