The Daily Workshop
Report
by Robert Sheard
(TMF Sheard)
LEXINGTON, KY. (Jan. 23, 1998) -- The Workshop for 1998 has a scant three weeks behind it, but six of the eight screens are managing to stay ahead of the S&P 500. (Of course, we're not going to mention the fact that the two screens trailing the index are two I developed <sigh>.)
Of course, three weeks doesn't mean much and we've got 49 to go in this season. My real reason in bringing up the returns is that I want to point once again to the new structure of the 1998 Workshop.
Each Friday, I update three files for the 1998 Workshop:
Current
Rankings
Current
Database
1988 Workshop
Returns
All of the data and rankings for our current Workshop system are contained in those three files. If you're pulling up the files we used in 1997 (either through old bookmarks or through links to the old files online), you're not going to see any rankings or returns newer than last December's.
We really are keeping these details current. In fact, this year, the rankings are updated weekly instead of monthly as we did last year. But in order to streamline the whole area, we've condensed the eight screens we follow into three simplified files. Please adjust your bookmarks to pull up the current information. If you lose the bookmarks, all three files are linked directly from our main Workshop page.
The Workshop stocks through January 21 have covered a wide range of performance, as you might expect. Three stocks have already given up more than 30% in January: ADC Telecom <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: ADCT)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: ADCT)") end if %>, Adaptec <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: ADPT)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: ADPT)") end if %>, and Input/Output <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: IO)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: IO)") end if %>. Since my data cuts off with Wednesday's close each week, these results don't include yesterday's implosion in Iomega <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: IOM)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: IOM)") end if %> yet.
But all is not grim. Alaska Air Group <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: ALK)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: ALK)") end if %>, Ethan Allen <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: ETH)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: ETH)") end if %>, and Best Buy <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: BBY)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: BBY)") end if %> have all posted gains so far between 20% and 30%, buoying several of the screens' overall returns.
We're just getting started, Fools, but stick around and let's see how many of the eight screens can stay ahead of the S&P 500. Have a Foolish weekend!
