A call to arms for all Relative Strength junkies! As promised, I've run the screens from 1986 through the present to generate a Relative Strength history, and now it's time for you to pitch in and flesh out the details.
Here's the screening procedure I used. Starting with the stocks ranked 1 for Timeliness by the Value Line Investment Survey at the beginning of each year, I sorted them by their 26-week returns. The following lists of stocks for each year represent the ten best according to that sorting method. (They are listed in descending order, so if you're looking for five stocks, you'd select the top five.)
I have looked up all of the annual returns that are available in my database. The gaps are for stocks that either no longer trade (mergers and acquisitions) or are no longer in the Value Line database. That's where you come in.
If you want to help flesh out this database, here's what we need. Go to the library and see if it has the Standard & Poor's Daily Stock Price Record. (Old newspapers won't be much help because you'd have trouble when stocks split and pay dividends.) You'll have to look at all four volumes for the year in question to check for splits and dividends each quarter.
Find the closing price on the last trading day of the previous year, adjust for any splits during the year, add in the dividends, and get the closing price on the last trading day of the year in question. Then calculate the total percentage gain this way:
Gain = (Final Price + Dividends - Original Price) / Original Price
Then let me have the numbers and we'll fill in the gaps. When we're done, we can compare this to a similar test using the IBD Relative Strength rankings and have a 12-year history for each of the pure Relative Strength screens we're tracking in the Workshop.
One final note: I've listed the ticker symbols that were current at the time of the rankings. Many have changed so if you can't locate a stock in the OTC volume of the reference series, double-check the NYSE and AMEX volumes as well.
