The Daily Workshop Report

A lot of readers are following along with Ethan Haskell's ([email protected]) alternative to the Dow Approach, Beating the S&P (BSP). Essentially, BSP applies the Dow Approach techniques (high-yield, low-price rankings) to large-cap stocks not included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Dr. Haskell uses annual rankings published by a print magazine <choke, gasp> to help generate his list of stocks, narrowing the field by eliminating utilities and stocks that would create over-weighting in any one industry.

But with the technology in our hands these days, there's no need to rely on those out-of-date print rags (heh, heh). So as a service to all of Ethan's followers, I'll post a new list of the top 100 stocks by market capitalization occasionally. One note I should point out: BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: BRK.A and BRK.B)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: BRK.A and BRK.B)") end if %> is a hard one to pin down. Value Line lists its market cap as quite a bit lower than other resources. So you make the call on "Investing with Warren." This is the list as I get it from the Value Line database. Happy hunting.

Included in the list are the following: market capitalization (in millions), company name, ticker symbol, and Value Line industry group.
