The Daily Workshop Report
by Robert Sheard (TMF Sheard)

LEXINGTON, KY. (May 20, 1997)

A number of readers have asked about the possibility of adding my experiments with technology stocks to the workshop database on a regular basis. While that's not something I'm wont to do anytime soon, I will certainly be glad to share information as I come across it. (The reason I'm hesitant to do so is that the stocks are not chosen from the same list of 100 stocks we use for the other growth screens and at some point, I'll never keep them all straight.)

One thing I can do is share current rankings periodically (although I make no promises about their frequency). Using data from this past week, I screened for the fifteen largest hi-tech companies and then sorted by price performance over the past six and twelve months. Using pure price performance is slightly different from Investor's Business Daily's time-weighted Relative Strength rankings, but it's a good proxy.

The five stocks from that group of fifteen with the best price performance over the last year are:

Dell Computers (DELL)
Intel (INTC)
Microsoft (MSFT)
Compaq Computer (CPQ)
Texas Instruments (TXN)

Using price performance over the last six months as the screen, the top five are:

Dell Computers (DELL)
Texas Instruments (TXN)
Microsoft (MSFT)
Lucent Technologies (LU)
IBM (IBM)

I'll do my best to update these rankings periodically (perhaps once a month or so). In the meantime, head to the Foolish Workshop folder to discuss these experiments. Our particular folder is one of the most active in Fooldom, simply because the enthusiasm of our readers is infectious when we're working together. Folly at its best!
