The Daily Workshop Report
by Robert Sheard (TMF Sheard)

LEXINGTON, KY. (May 7, 1997)

I'm two-for-two. It must be the hangover depression after Rick Pitino's press conference, announcing he's leaving Kentucky to coach in the NBA again. (Some team on the East Coast. No one's really familiar with them.) But I left two more numbers in the wrong places yesterday and the resulting returns were off for a couple of the Growth screens.

I think I've got everything tidy again, but I appreciate those of you with eagle eyes letting me know when you see a glaring error. Community effort is the key to this whole endeavor.

Despite the sell-off late this afternoon in the Dow stocks, technology stocks held up fairly well, reversing the performance pattern we've witnessed in recent months, where the Dow scorched ahead and the Nasdaq bottomed out on the pavement.

The chief excitement of the day was INTEL's <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: INTC)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: INTC)") end if %> announcement of its latest processor, the Pentium II. Of course, speculation is floating around concerning a bug that causes errors in some extremely advanced equations (like calculating Pitino's new compensation package), but a similar flaw in an earlier chip was corrected quickly and the company recovered any goodwill lost in a hurry. I assume a similar "fix" will be found in short order.

Nevertheless, technology stocks, which took the brunt of the recent market correction, seem to have perked up considerably, which is good news for our more aggressive growth models. If it holds, we may be able to salve some wounds in the next few months.
