The Daily Workshop Report

With scary economic numbers and worries about earnings reports missing everyone's perhaps-too-lofty expectations, stocks in general took it on the chin today. The Nasdaq stocks got pounded even harder than the average issue.

From the December closing high of 1388.04, the Nasdaq is now down nearly 200 points, more than 13% off the high. Of course, many of the individual stocks are off considerably more than that, some being cut more than in half over the last few months.

The Dow, on the other hand, peaked much later than the Nasdaq, topping out in March at 7085. Since then, the blue chip index has shed just under 10%. So, what do we make of it? Normal healthy correction in an otherwise bullish market or beginning of a full-fledged bear market?

No one knows, of course, and you shouldn't really bother trying to predict the market. As a friend of mine recently said, market timers were invented only to make weathermen look good.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, we won't be updating the Foolish Workshop database every weekend for the indefinite future, but for those of you looking to update your own parts of it, here are the changes to the database. Three stocks are being replaced this week: ADC TELECOM <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: ADCT)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: ADCT)") end if %>, CATALINA MARKETING <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: POS)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: POS)") end if %>, and STORAGE TECHNOLOGY <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:STK)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:STK)") end if %> are being dropped this week. Being added are KUHLMAN CORP <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: KUH)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: KUH)") end if %>, GENERAL NUTRITION <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: GNCI)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: GNCI)") end if %>, and PAIRGAIN TECHNOLOGY <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PAIR)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: PAIR)") end if %>.

Hang in there, Fools. It's probably not possible, but forget about the market this weekend and enjoy yourself.
