ValuTool - Questions & Answers Q: I've tried opening ValuTool, and all that comes up is garbage. A: Whenever you download a file from the Fool, make sure that the first time you open it, you open it from the program that it was intended to run on, not from the icon. Often, the icon will try to link it back to AOL, which is wrong. In this case, you'd be trying to open a very complex spreadsheet from a program (AOL) which wasn't made to open spreadsheets. Instead, open Excel, go to the File>>Open and open ValuTool from there. When you save it from Excel, then you'll be able to use the icon thereafter. Q: Nope, tried that. It still won't open. Something about the wrong version of Excel. A: ValuTool only works on versions of Excel later than 5.0. Because of the macros and programming involved, there is no way to get it to work with anything earlier than 5.0. Q: Every time I enter a percentage, like 13%, it ends up coming out too large, like 1300%. Why? A: A percentage is really just a fraction, or a decimal. So 13% is 13 parts of 100, or 13/100, or .13. Like many programs which use calculations, ValuTool needs you to enter .13 for 13% instead of just putting in 13. Q: What do I do if I can't find all of the information that ValuTool is looking for? A: Obviously, more information is better. However, if there are numbers you do not know, leave them blank. With most of the Valuations and Ratios, ValuTool will let you know on the Valuations page if there are numbers missing that make it unable to complete the calculations. Q: When I open ValuTool, I get a message that says 'Can't find file or library.' How do I fix this? A: Approximately 1-3% of people will get this message when they first try PT or VT. This will occasionally happen if an upgrade to Win 95 was recently done. Most people won't realize until now that their Excel was messed up when they upgraded. This is a simple problem to fix--just reinstall Excel. Don't forget to open PT or VT from within Excel!
