Charity Drive Update

This week, a very generous Fool gave more than just his $0.02 worth to our Share Our Strength (SOS) charity drive. In fact, he gave more than a million times that -- about $21,000 in stock.

This kind Fool contributed 125 shares of an equity income fund, which SOS was able to sell for $168 a share. "I had no idea how much each share was worth," said Karen Stevans over at SOS, who took the donation. "Fools are very generous."

If you've been considering donating some stock to SOS, don't be intimidated by this Fool's generosity. While stock donations tend to be higher than cash donations, $21,000 is certainly not your typical stock contribution. It's more like $500 to $1,000, compared with an average of roughly $150 from cash donors. Karen tells me that Fools are usually more generous than typical SOS contributors, who give $75 to $100 on average.

By giving stock, not only do you make a tax-deductible contribution to a worthy cause, same as you would by giving cash, but you also can avoid paying capital gains tax on appreciated stock. TMF Taxes gives an excellent explanation of the benefits of donating stock. The upshot is that giving appreciated stock can be extremely Foolish in terms of your personal financial planning, while at the same time benefiting a great charitable cause.

Donating stock isn't as complicated as it sounds. All the information you need to provide fits on a single page:

  1. Date
  2. Name and address of brokerage firm and broker
  3. "I/We request that you transfer and deliver [fill in number] shares of [fill in name of stock] from my/our account [fill in number] to the following account and address:
    Paine Webber, Inc. Acct. MV88724-21 Name of Share Our Strength DTC #0221 8045 Leesburg Pike, Suite 700 Vienna, VA 22182
  4. Your signature, name, address, and phone number
That's it.

In case you're wondering what happens to the donated stock, SOS typically sells the shares immediately. One Fool gave 20 shares of Microsoft and asked SOS to sell 10 shares and hold on to the other 10 -- SOS gladly obliged. The Fool said he would call back in a few months to check on the stock, establishing the foundation for a year-round relationship with the organization.

So what about brokerage commissions? No need to worry. Stock donations aren't getting eaten up by commissions. Paine Webber doesn't charge SOS for contributions of 100 shares or less, which cover most donations. For more than 100 shares, Paine Webber charges 1.5% commission. So, for example, only $315 of the $21,000 went to pay for the commission. As long as you give 100 shares or less, you can rest assured that 100% of the market value of the shares will go straight to SOS.
