WHAT WILL THIS MONEY DO?
Fight hunger at its root cause
The funds raised from the Fool Charity Fund will support Share Our Strength's national anti-hunger efforts. As part of its commitment to prevent hunger, Share Our Strength will grant the Fool Charity Fund dollars to Foodchain's Community Kitchens -- an innovative initiative that combats hunger by getting at its roots, unemployment.
The Motley Fool and Share Our Strength believe that it takes more than food to fight hunger, and look to invest in short- and long-term solutions to end hunger and poverty. The Fool Charity Fund dollars will be granted through SOS to Foodchain's Community Kitchens, which help local hunger-relief programs provide not only healthy meals but also hands-on job training programs to the unemployed men and women they serve.
Foodchain's Community Kitchens give motivated people the requisite hands-on skills in food service and prepare them for employment. Their training programs are typically 12-weeks long and are run by volunteer chefs and a professional program coordinator, who work together to create a positive learning environment and help the graduates find substantive jobs.
Foodchain's Community Kitchens are innovative and effective, but only exist in a few communities. Share Our Strength will dedicate the Fool Charity Fund to help establish Foodchain's Community Kitchens in additional sites across the country. The more funds raised, the more community kitchens will be created -- and the more hunger-relief groups will be able to address not just the symptoms of hunger but also one of its root causes: unemployment.
The first SOS grants made with the Fool Charity Fund will help establish Foodchain's Community Kitchens at these food-rescue agencies:
Community Food Rescue, Charlotte, NC. Community Food Rescue, which delivers meals to homebound individuals, will join forces with Friendship Trays to develop a community kitchen. They plan to train 48 students using Foodchain's Community Kitchen curriculum in 1998.
Dare To Care, Louisville, KY. Dare To Care plans to pair up with the St. Vincent de Paul Shelter and the Kentucky Restaurant Association to establish a community kitchen and train 42 people in 1998.
Food Runners, San Francisco, CA. Food Runners will partner with Episcopal Community Services to establish the community kitchen and train 115 homeless and formerly homeless individuals over the next three years.
