ADSL Deal

Westell bids to buy Amati

Oswego, Ill. -- Westell Technologies Inc. last week made a stock-swap offer for Amati Communications Corp. (Sunnyvale, Calif.), a pioneer in asymmetric digital-subscriber-line (ADSL) technology. ADSL rollout delays have left Amati low on resources.

Westell plans to run Amati as a wholly owned subsidiary, with Amati executive and development staffs reportedly remaining.

Benjamin Berry, Amati's vice president of marketing, said the acquisition opens a national sales channel and "allows us to complete an ATM interface for our modems."
