Despite running at good capacity utilization rates, the company is slightly less profitable than one would like to see. This might be due to the company's development of its surgery centers, women's health centers, and radiation oncology centers. Developing a niche here can be difficult, especially negotiating with the extremely cost-conscious managed care providers. Universal Health has the potential to break out in the profitability department, though, given its good capacity utilization and the potential to grow operations due to its relatively unencumbered balance sheet. Latest Financials Earnings per share for the 1997 second quarter were $0.51, a 21% increase from the $0.42 recorded in the same period in 1996. Net income for the three month period ended June 30, 1997 was $16.9 million, an increase of 38% from the same period in 1996. Net revenues in the quarter increased to $344 million, an increase of 22% over the same period in 1996. At June 30, 1997, balance sheet debt was approximately $269 million and shareholders' equity was approximately $496 million.
