Growth in non-regulated businesses will be key for utility companies going forward, making CMS an attractive alternative. Consumers Inc., a combination electric and gas utility company with service in all 68 counties of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, is the largest subsidiary of CMS Energy. Consumers' customer base includes a mix of residential, commercial, and diversified industrial customers, the largest of which are in the automotive industry. Latest Financials Second quarter consolidated net income of $53.7 million was up 6% from $50.6 million in the second quarter of 1996. Earnings per share were $0.55 versus $0.54 earned in the same period in 1996. Second quarter operating revenue grew 10% to $1.04 billion from $938 million in the second quarter of 1996.
