The company dominates in the arena of "minimally invasive" surgical devices, that is, devices that are inserted in natural openings in the body or with the help of small incisions, ouch. The company's products are used in "interventional medical specialties," including: cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonary medicine, radiology, urology and vascular surgery. The purpose of these products is to reduce procedural trauma, complexity, and overall risk to the patient, as well as accelerating recovery times. Boston Scientific Corporation today released financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 1997. Net sales for the first quarter increased 24% to $399 million as compared to $322 million in the first quarter of 1996. International revenues for the quarter were impacted by changes in foreign currency exchange rates. Without the impact of changes in exchange rates, net sales for the first quarter increased 27%. Net income for the first quarter increased to $72.6 million, or $.40 per share. This compares to net income of $65.5 million, exclusive of non-recurring and special charges of $68.7 million ($66.5 million net-of-tax) reported in the first quarter of 1996.
