Large-Cap Pharmaceuticals The Company Although teary eyes and sniffles might sound like bad news to you, for Schering-Plough Corp. <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: SGP)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: SGP)") end if %> they are big business. The company specializes in allergy and respiratory drugs, owning the rights to prescription drugs like antihistamine Claritin and nasal steroid Vancenase, as well as over-the-counter nasal spray Afrin. The company has a number of anti-cancer drugs like Eulexin, Intron A, and Ethyol. In addition, the company's hold on the dermatological market is pretty sold, as it makes antifungal cream Lotrison, topical steroid Elocon, and tanning lotion Coppertone. Schering-Plough is even responsible for Dr. Scholl's foot pads.
Add to all of the above that Schering-Plough is a major player in the animal
health market, increasing this hold with the acquisition of Mallinckrodt,
and the company represents one of the most well-rounded prescription and
over-the-counter drug companies in the world. With more than half of its
sales coming from managed care companies, Schering-Plough is not afraid of
the expansion of managed care into the pharmaceutical market. Schering-Plough's
acquisition of Canji in 1996 and its deal with Genome Therapeutics to make
antibiotics shows its commitment to using biotechnology and genetic mapping
to bolster its research and development efforts.
