Cymer is the leading provider of excimer laser illumination sources for use in deep ultraviolet photolithography systems (DUV). These are essential for the pilot and volume production segments of the semiconductor manufacturing market. The company has a virtual lock on the excimer lasers incorporated in DUV photolithography systems, with its products incorporated in over 90% of the end systems. For the first quarter of 1997 ended March 31, Cymer recorded net income of
$4.4 million, or 29 cents per share, on revenues of $36.9 million, compared
with a loss of $260,000, or a pro forma 3 cents per share, on revenues of
$7.2 million for the quarter ended March 31, 1996. Weighted average shares
outstanding at the end of the quarter were 15.2 million compared with a pro
forma 8.6 million a year ago. Product sales revenue for the first quarter
included 84 lasers, of which 80 were for semiconductor photolithography
applications. The company's president, Robert Akins, stated: "We have made
real progress in ramping our production. As our $91.4 million backlog at
March 31 indicates, we are gaining ground on meeting the market demand for
new laser systems.
