Drip Portfolio Report
Friday, February 6, 1998

ALEXANDRIA, VA (Feb. 6, 1998) -- The past week was spent looking at Intel <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(Nasdaq: INTC)") else Response.Write("(Nasdaq: INTC)") end if %> in three parts. Tuesday we considered the company's gross margins and price-cutting. Wednesday we touched on what Intel is selling in the segmented computer PC market, and Thursday we looked at where Intel sells by region before studying the company's cash flow and how it spends the money that it creates.

Other news in the Drip Port includes the fact that $100 was added to the portfolio on February 1, as is done at the beginning of each month. Also, we bought $50 worth of Intel on February 2, at $83 and change (our average cost per share is now just below $80). Details are available on the Transaction History page and in Today's Numbers. Intel was upgraded by a few analysts this week to "buy" ratings, giving the stock a continued boost.

Next, we should be buying $50 worth of Johnson & Johnson <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: JNJ)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: JNJ)") end if %> on Monday. J & J has been strong since year-end earnings were announced last month (we'll look at those after we finish with Intel) and on merger speculation in the industry following the rumors circling two giant pharmaceuticals (SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome). Friday in the Cash-King Portfolio Tom Gardner considers Pfizer <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: PFE)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: PFE)") end if %> vs. Johnson & Johnson.

Finally, I'm still answering email from January. Although I really enjoy the more personalized email contact, the quickest answers to all of your questions are to be had on the Drip message boards. Also, you get a nice mix of opinion on the message boards and over time the communities that develop are very "personalized" as well. The Drip -- Basics board is best for general questions, while the Drip -- Investments board is great for talking about specific companies (and investment philosophies in general, we've found). Both boards are linked at the top right of this page every day.

If you have specific questions about Intel, please post them on the Investments board and I'll try to cover them next week in the columns. General DRP questions are usually quickly answered by Vince Hanks (TMF Elwood) or myself on the Basics board (and often by many other long-time board followers, too).

Regarding Intel, if you're reading this week's articles for the first time this weekend and you have questions, please share them. Have a great weekend.

Foolishly,

Jeff Fischer
