LEXINGTON, KY. (May 23, 1997) -- If you've been holding your breath under water for the last five months with the Foolish Four, we finally broke the ocean's surface today. With the gain of 1.73% on this final session before Memorial Day, we pulled above the break-even point by a scant 0.05%.
Granted, compared to a 13% or 14% gain for the Dow, it's nothing to brag about, but the recent gains have been out-pacing the market and closing some of the gap opened up in the first four months of 1997.
Helping AT&T <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: T)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: T)") end if %> a tad today was the announcement that the hacker claiming to have penetrated a crucial security window in AT&T's WorldNet Internet service recanted his story. AT&T maintains that there was indeed no such flaw in the software.
GENERAL MOTORS <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") end if %> held its annual shareholders meeting today and the company focused on strong sales in May, even though year-over-year, sales are lower than last year's. Richard Wagoner, GM's president of North American Operations, said the company has faced difficult market conditions and its competitors have been offering higher incentives than last year.
Across the board today, a good way to launch the holiday weekend. Now turn
off your computer and go have a Foolish holiday. See you next week!
