The Daily Dow
FOOL GLOBAL WIRE
by Robert Sheard (TMF Sheard)
LEXINGTON, KY. (May 9, 1997) -- In a classic case of split personalities,
the market couldn't decide if it was Bullish or Bearish today. Fed Chairman
Alan Greenspan made typically cryptic remarks in a speech last night,
interptretations of which ranged the spectrum today.
While he admitted that inflation hasn't appeared on the horizon and the economy
appears to be slowing, Greenspan made it clear the Fed would continue to
raise interest rates if necessary. Some bond traders took that to mean the
Fed wouldn't raise rates at the next Open Market Committee meeting on May
20, while others took it to mean that the Fed would indeed raise rates again
as a further insurance policy against inflation and over-heated growth in
the economy.
You know what our take on the issue is: no big deal. Whether the Fed raises
rates or not, Dow Approach investors don't waver from the fully invested,
lifetime-savings approach that has weathered all kinds of business cycles
over several decades.
Short of a crystal ball clearer than anyone else's out there, ignoring the
overall market and the endless and contradictory predictions you'll hear
or read about daily is the only Foolish plan.
In today's action, the big winner for the Foolish Four was GENERAL
MOTORS <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: GM)") end if %>. Several cyclical stocks had nice gains today,
CATERPILLAR <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: CAT)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: CAT)") end if %>, for example, but GM may have profited on
news that competitor CHRYSLER <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:C)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:C)") end if %> settled the negotiations to end to
its labor strike.
Looking ahead to next week, those of you holding GENERAL ELECTRIC
<% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE: GE)") else Response.Write("(NYSE: GE)") end if %> will have your holding split two-for-one, so don't tune in Monday
and panic. Have an unWise weekend!
