The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, Kentucky (December 5) -- After yesterday's bruising, Thursday's session was a little bit of comfort for the Foolish Four model portfolio. Both Chevron and DuPont posted nice gains in the middle of a very skittish market, Kodak gained a fraction and 3M slipped a tad. Overall, though, the model seems to be biding its time until the annual update, which we'll make using the current rankings on January 1. The only news of consequence today was the announcement that Kodak has signed an agreement with Price/Costco to make Kodak the only major film brand carried by the nation's fifth-largest film retailer, which operates nearly 300 discount warehouse stores. In the photography battles between Kodak and Japan's Fuji Photo Film Company, this round went to the folks from Rochester. The company claims the agreement isn't a direct blockade to close out Fuji, but rather an attempt to meet shifting retail industry approaches to inventory controls. And while the agreement doesn't stipulate that Fuji film be taken off the shelves, that is for all intents and purposes the practical result of the agreement. Kodak is reportedly discussing a similar arrangement with Kmart, the number-two film retailer, trailing only Wal-Mart. As the year comes to a close, many of you may be heading towards your first annual portfolio update. Just as a reminder, then, here are the steps you would follow for the typical Dow Approach renewal. Step One -- Sell any of your Dow holdings that are no longer among the current top group. Step Two -- Calculate your total portfolio value and then the value per position your ideal new portfolio should hold. Step Three -- Adjust any stocks you're holding over from last year to bring them in line with the value you calculated in Step Two. (Use your judgment here about whether a perfect re-adjustment is warranted given what your commissions cost. No sense buying three shares of a stock just to bring it exactly in line and paying an extra commission.) Step Four -- Buy the new stocks from the current rankings, again using the value you calculated in Step Two. That's all there is to it. The whole process will take you less than fifteen minutes if you're looking up the current rankings here online. How Foolish!
