The Daily Dow
Wednesday, December 4, 1996
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, KY. (December 4) -- If you read my Foolish Four report yesterday, I mentioned how the Dow pulled off a beautiful swan dive, springing gracefully from the board, stalling out, and then letting gravity accelerate at 32-feet-per-second-squared until it smacked the water with an 80-point loss.

Look at today's action as what takes place under water when the dive ends. The diver continues down into the pool at a slowing speed (to the tune of another 60+ points today) and then gradually bottoms out and heads up toward the surface. So after extending yesterday's losses to roughly 150 points from the previous peak, the market recovered some of those gains today to close down a modest 20 points.

The Foolish Four model, though, scraped the bottom of the pool and came away with an ugly bruise. We went five-for-five in the loser column today, giving up some ground to all the market indices. Nonetheless, the Foolish Four is still beating the market in yet another good year for the Bulls, so we can't complain too loudly.

In company news, Kodak announced today that its DC20 Digital Camera is now available for an estimated price of $199. Kodak believes that breaking the $200 barrier makes the camera the lowest-priced point-and-shoot digital camera on the market. Robert Unterberger, president of Digital and Applied Imaging and vice president for Kodak explained that the company is trying to make this as lock-step as possible for consumers: "It ships with a range of software that lets people have fun with the DC20 camera right out of the box, making it a great value at almost any price." Well, maybe not any price, but $200 isn't bad.
